LED greenhouse lights have the same amount of lumens and are equally efficient in the sense of light output as HPS lights. The added bonus you get with LED light bars for indoor farming is the cut in costs. That’s right—by using LED for indoor farming, you’re saving money.
The measurement is somewhere around five to ten times higher capital cost per photon. Basically, you’re getting more bang for your buck with LED lights.
LED vs HPS
HPS has for a long time been the popular choice in lights for your grow, but LEDs have caught up. People are noticing the differences in LED and HPS. As we stated earlier, LEDs tend to save you a lot of money.
On top of that, LED for indoor farming means bigger, juicier plants. It’s believed that LED lights bring out more trichomes and higher potency. Those natural flavors and smells explode right out of the bulbs!
LED lights tend to come with built-in fans and cooling systems that vent air up and away from the plants. HPS lights tend to heat up really bad, which can be a hazard to your indoor farming project.
Not only do LEDs run cooler, but they also look cooler.
Avoiding problems with LED for indoor farming
Typically, if LED lights are kept close to the plant while they are growing, there will be a distinct color difference. Many people could mistake this difference as nutrient deficiency, but never fear, they are perfectly healthy.
It’s important to keep LED lights about 12” to 18” away from the plant to prevent this “light burn.”
